Her are a couple ideas, but feel free to make alternative suggestions:
+We don't have class, but rather I meet with each research paper group during the week (class time and office hours); each group gets and hour, and we read the drafts and talk about them in detail. +We reserve the computer lab for however long is necessary, so you can work on -- individually and/or in groups -- your open media projects. If you're having technical difficulties or want some responses from us, we can all work together.

Note: Feel free to respond to the reading as you wish.
Lessig first takes us through several examples of piracy in America, from the film industry (e.g., Fox stealing from Edison and escaping to California) to radio stations not paying recording artists (such as Madonna) for performances; instead, it is the composer that is compensated. Further, Lessig tells us that for 100 years America didn't honor foreign copyrights. The worry, for Lessig, is that as today's laws are moving towards a zero-tolerance policy and this move will create monopolies and stifle creativity. Is this section, what did you find most surprising or interesting, and why? Provide some analysis regarding the example(s) you cite in Lessig. AND What's your reaction to the YouTube guitar lessons being pulled?

Be careful what you name your wikipedia account if you are writing your wikipedia article there. I used wtf is juice, and within five minutes my account was flagged for being offensive and impersonating someone (David Chapell). I started a new account called Ftw is juice, but that got flagged for being a "sockpuppet." I am now restricted when I edit from my laptop.

I thought is was funny that the executive at Fox threatened to call the cops if she was quoted and Lessig went ahead and quoted her. Anyway, she does have the right to charge for the Simpsons property but there should be a limit to what can be charged based on the amount of the episode used.
The decision that the House of Lords made seemed fair. The monopoly that the book sellers held needed to be broken down. If they were rule in favor of the written law prior to the Statute of Anne the statute would have been useless.

One thing I discovered is that if you use blogger and upload photos from your computer directly onto blogger (by clicking on "browse" when you add a photo), the image resolution is really bad.
A quick fix is to create a photobucket account (www.photobucket.com) and upload your pictures onto photobucket first. Then, when you need to add that photo to your blog, you can copy the URL link of that photo on photobucket and use that for your blog. Here's a good tutorial on how to use photobucket: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=1336867 After fiddling around with this, I got much clearer images on my blog. Anyway, I thought this would be a good thread to talk about problems we encounter while making blogs.

One way we can think of fandom in terms of consumption and production. There are those fans that consume "official" content and those who consume "official" and "unofficial" content. And then there are fans that not only consume content but also produce content.
Share what kind of "content" you consume (are a fan of) (i.e., movies, tv shows, music, sport(s), politics, games, videogames, comics, etc.) and try to describe what kind of fan you are. In addition, why are you he kind of fan you consider yourself to be? And, how do you "do" fandom? Let's try to come up with some labels for fan types as Jenkins does with types of "viewers" in the Transmedia Storytelling chapter. This is one of those "academic" moves so often made. Feel free to move in other direction with the conversation, too.

Hi guys, I was surfing the net and found this really cool exhibit they are showing at MoMA:
http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/2008/elasticmind/# Although some of this stuff does not pertain to this class, some of it involves artistic interpretations/responses to the internet/communication/technology. Anyway, all of it is pretty cool. Maybe you will get inspired by looking at this. :)

There's an article in the NYT today describing how information in Facebook is archived and stored, even after you delete your account. This obviously scares privacy activists, but what's the impact on people like us - 'netizens'?
With continual news warnings of harassment, job security issues, and just plain embarrassment resulting from a lack of privacy on the internet, we know that this is a risk. Yet we continue to put information out on Facebook and other social networking sites. My question is - What impact has sharing personal information had for you over the internet? Has anyone had a negative or positive experience related to information and privacy? Has anyone been harassed or stalked, or been fired from a job because of information on their Facebook profile or a post in a blog? On the flip side, has anyone ever been commended or made new friends because of their facebook or blog?

Decide on a Wiki article topic (or a few) and write about where it will be; why you've chosen it; how it fulfills a need or gap; what research you expect to do (and/or what resources you expect to need) in the process; feel free to add links or anything else you feel is necessary.

for tomorrow, we have already read the wikipedia articles for collective intelligence and the introduction to Yoshi's book. The idea of a collective IQ is very relative to the subjects of wikis, as that is how they are started. An internet connection and creative minds are available all over the world and now "two heads can be better than one" even if those heads live on different continents. The trend of price being the end all be all for economy is waning significantly. Have you been involved in a situation of collective intelligence? How do you think having the power of voice in the hands of ANYone is affecting our economic community today in America? I'll post my thoughts in a bit.

This one was comes from the 2nd page of our pre-blogging response. If you've never heard of tinyurl.com, this class presents a great opportunity to start using it, and that 2nd page (if my diagnosis is correct) demonstrates why it's a great and necessary service.
Have you ever wanted to share a url with friends and it about a gaziilion characters long? (See Jia's reply on the 2nd; I think that's why the page now stretches to infinity: there isn't a place for a line break to happen.) Go to tinyurl.com, paste in the long url and hit the Make TinyUrl button. You now have a very short url!

Has anyone ever seen the CBS show "J.A.G."? It is about Navy lawyers who are called in to investigate every suspicious situation (mainly involving deaths) that occurs in the Navy. It ran for 10 years on CBS before it was discontinue, and I used to watch it every week with my mom. For my blog, I was tyring to come up with an idea and was thinking about writing a summary/review about all the episodes in the first season. Does anyone think they would read it?

Write about a paragraph or more about your previous experience blogging (if you have); what you've heard about blogging in the past and how might what you've learned this week differ; what your plans are for your blog (what's your purpose? what kind of blogging community do you think you want to join? who is your target audience? what kinds of media do you expect to incorporate?)
Remember, discussion board posts are informal writing. You are encouraged to share un-polished ideas and use the collective knowledge of the community to work through your ideas.
